Hospitality Stories: Mix Bakeshop

To celebrate our partners’ dedication to excellence and hospitality, we've asked a group of them to provide insights on what hospitality means to them and how they go about creating a warm, welcoming environment in their unique spaces.

This week, our hospitality story features Mix Bakeshop.

Since 2006, Mix Bakeshop has become a sought-out destination for the Ashland, OR community to indulge and nourish themselves with artisan pastries and Direct Trade coffee. With the stylistic airs of a French café and a pinch of small town hospitality, Mix provides a melting pot of creative and high quality products in an environment catered to quiet study and social engagement alike. Mix has become such an anchor of hospitality in the area that, in 2018, owner Jamie North opened ReMix Coffee Bar, a multi-roaster cafe serving a revolving selection of the best coffee roasters in the country.

“Mix has always strived to find the balance between quality and efficiency,” says Jamie. “We prioritize genuinely personalized experiences and amazing products while serving customers in a fast-paced environment. The last few years highlighted the true value of community and togetherness — I believe it’s essential to have connection when serving food that’s made with love.”

This connection is felt through every interaction at Mix and Remix. Whether it be the team of folks serving specialty coffee and artisan pastries, or the unique design touches in the cafe spaces, one can’t help but feel a part of the family — be it first-timer or longtime regular.

Take it from Bo

Bo Thunell has been a member of the Stumptown team since 2011, holding positions in our cafes (barista into cafe management) and on the wholesale team (education, account management, and senior sales and market development). When asked about his experience with Mix Bakeshop, it’s clear from the get-go this is a special place:

“The Mix trip is a legendary experience… almost a rite of passage,” says Bo. “I remember becoming the wholesale educator after managing our Division cafe and hearing about the legend that is Mix. Jamie North has created an institution built on hospitality and world class pastries and breads. Her culinary background goes deep into the farm-to-table movement in the Bay Area, and now she’s brought those years of experience to the beautiful town of Ashland—helping to first open Amuse and then Mix Bakeshop.”

“My first trip to Ashland would shape my training career forever,” he continues. “The stories that preceded me were ones of triangulation cuppings, followed by beers and rooftop jumps into the pool. Those stories all proved to be true, but the one thing I recall after my first trip was how invested the entire crew was in creating the best coffee for customers daily. The culture that surrounds Mix is a testament to Jamie and the entire crew’s legacy at building a hospitable and quality-focused space. It hits all the marks of a world class place with the charm of the sunny Ashland landscape. The cafe is packed with the community day in and day out.”

“Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with Jame and Nic of Mix, and I always leave feeling fulfilled and inspired. What they’ve created for the community is so special, and no trip to Southern Oregon is complete without an espresso and hello to all the folks at Mix and Re-mix.”
