Kalita Wave
How to Brew Coffee with a Kalita Wave
With its stainless steel and wavy contours, the Kalita Wave wins over coffee and design enthusiasts alike. It’s a favorite pour over brew method for home use and it’s great on the go, too. The flat-bottom filter helps with even extraction while brewing. The key to mastering this brewer is the slow spiral pour.

1
Prep and preheat
Fill your kettle with filtered water and heat to just off-the-boil. Put the Kalita Wave on top of a mug or carafe and place a Wave filter in the dripper. Rinse with hot water to remove any papery flavor from the filter and preheat the dripper. Pour out the rinse water.
2
Weigh and grind coffee
Measure out 21g (about 3 Tablespoons) of your favorite Stumptown coffee and grind it medium-fine like sea salt. Add the coffee to the filter, shaking it gently to level the grounds. Zero your scale if using.
3
Saturate grounds
Start a count-up timer when you add the hot water. Saturate the dry grounds completely with 60g of water in the first 10 seconds and allow it to bloom. Stir to make sure there are no dry grounds.
4
Second pour
At 0:45, pour water up to 200g in a spiral motion by 1:00. The spiral motion helps give you an even extraction and keeps everything integrated.
5
Pulse and wait
Over the next minute, periodically pour small amounts of water (around 25-50g), reaching 345g by 2:00. Pour over the dark spots and avoid the light ones. Allow the coffee to fully drain, which should finish between 2:45 to 3:00.
6
Serve and Enjoy
Remove the Wave from your carafe or mug and serve!
