How to Choose the Right Coffee

Finding your perfect coffee doesn’t have to be complicated—but a little know-how goes a long way. Whether you're chasing fruity and bright or bold and smoky, here are a couple key things to think about when you're dialing in your next bag.

Single Origin vs. Blend: What’s the Difference?

  • Single Origin coffees come from one specific farm or region, and they’re all about unique flavors and a sense of place. Like Colombia El Jordan, which delivers syrupy cherry, dark chocolate, and baking spice from the lush highlands. Or Indonesia Bies Penantan, a medium roast with dark chocolate, pineapple, and clove notes from the rich volcanic soils of Sumatra.
  • Blends are crafted by combining beans from multiple origins to create balance, consistency, and depth. Hundred Mile is a smooth, easygoing blend with a chocolatey backbone and just enough fruit to keep things interesting.

Not sure where to start? If you’re curious about terroir and want to taste something distinct, try a single origin. Want a crowd-pleaser that brews up solid every time? Go with a blend.

Light, Medium, or Dark: Know Your Roast

  • Light Roast – Bright, juicy, and complex. A coffee like Homestead keeps it light on the roast. Expect a balance of chocolate, candied fruit, and nougat sweetness.
  • Medium Roast – Balanced and approachable. Colombia El Jordan hits that sweet spot—full-bodied with notes of caramel, red fruit, and subtle spice.
  • Dark Roast – Big, bold, and roasty. French Roast is our classic dark roast that doesn’t mess around. Smoky, bittersweet, and built for those who appreciate a classic dark brew with big flavor.

There’s no wrong way to choose—just follow your flavor and your mood. However you brew, we've got the coffee to match.

Stumptown Coffee FAQ

What is Stumptown Coffee Roasters?

Stumptown is a specialty coffee roaster founded in Portland, Oregon. We source our beans through direct trade relationships with producers across four continents, many of whom we've worked with for over a decade. We pioneered the Direct Trade sourcing model in 2003, paying premium prices tied directly to quality, and in 2024 over 90 percent of our purchases came through partnerships of three or more consecutive years. Every coffee we roast is built on those relationships. Learn more about our story.

Does Stumptown sell ground coffee?

We do. In fact, some of our coffees are available in both whole bean and ground options. Just select your preferred grind when adding to cart.

Does Stumptown offer coffee subscriptions?

Yes. With a Stumptown coffee subscription, you get coffee roasted to order and shipped on your schedule. You can adjust your selections, frequency, or cancel anytime.

How should I store my coffee to keep it fresh?

Keep your coffee in an airtight container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid storing it in the fridge or freezer, as temperature changes can introduce condensation and affect flavor. For the best taste, try to use your coffee within two to three weeks of the roast date.
