AeroPress
How to Brew Coffee with an AeroPress
The AeroPress has been a favorite brewing method
since it was invented in 2005 by engineer Alan
Adler. Lightweight, durable, and endlessly
travel-friendly, it’s beloved by coffee nerds and
campers alike.
We recommend the AeroPress
for coffee that’s sweet, full-bodied, and clean.
With the right grind size, water ratio, and timing,
this little brewer can make an incredibly balanced
cup in just a few minutes.
Follow our
AeroPress brew guide below to learn the Stumptown
method for dialing in your grind, pouring with

Follow along step by step and see how it comes together.
1
Prep and preheat
Fill your kettle with filtered water and heat to just off the boil. Place an AeroPress filter in the basket, attach the basket to the brew chamber, and set the brewer on top of a carafe or mug. Rinse with hot water to preheat the brewer and remove any papery flavor from the filter, then discard the rinse water.
2
Weigh and grind coffee
Measure 17g of Stumptown coffee (about 2½ tablespoons) and grind it fine, about the texture of table salt. A consistent fine grind helps the AeroPress brew a balanced, full-bodied cup.
3
Add coffee
Place the AeroPress funnel on top of the brew chamber and add the ground coffee. Remove the funnel and zero your scale if you’re using one to prepare for adding water.
4
Add water and stir
Start a timer when you add the hot water. Pour 220g of water (to about the No. 4 mark on the brew chamber) within about 10 seconds. Stir to fully saturate the coffee grounds and begin the AeroPress extraction.
5
Place plunger and wait
Carefully insert the plunger into the top of the brew chamber and pull up slightly to create a pressure seal. Let the coffee steep, but don’t plunge yet.
6
Stir and plunge
At 1:15, remove the plunger and give the coffee slurry another quick stir. Replace the plunger and gently press down with steady pressure, stopping when you hear a hissing sound. The total AeroPress brew time should be just under two minutes.
7
Serve and enjoy
Remove the AeroPress from your carafe or mug and enjoy your freshly brewed coffee.
