Father and son team Arturo Aguirre Sr. and Arturo Aguirre Jr. own and operate Finca El Injerto with tireless dedication to quality practices and sustainable farming. For decades, the Aguirres have focused on growing, processing, and exporting some of the highest quality coffee in Guatemala. Our longest-standing Direct Trade partners, Stumptown has been purchasing coffee from Finca el Injerto since 2003.

Finca El Injerto is a 750-hectare farm located in the mountains in the department of Huehuetenango, near Guatemala’s western border. Over half of this sweeping landscape is a protected natural forest reserve – the largest protected forest in Huehuetenango. Farm management at Finca El Injerto is meticulous. Plots are organized by coffee variety and each picking is kept separate throughout fermentation, washing, and drying. The farm and mill managers participate in quality control, ensuring that those in charge of harvesting and processing are closely connected to the end result.

In general at Injerto, there is very little waste. Natural spring water is used throughout El Injerto’s operations – to feed their trout farm, to move and process coffee, and to power their hydroelectric plant. The surplus generated from the hydroelectric plant is sold back to the local grid. Coffee parchment is reused as fuel for mechanical driers, and worms break down coffee cherry pulp to become fertilizer. In 2017, El Injerto became the first Guatemalan farm to obtain Carbon Neutral Certification. Solar panels installed in 2019 mean that the operations are almost 100% run on renewable energy.

"Attention to detail" doesn't quite capture what you see at Finca el Injerto. It is more accurately a mastery of, or perhaps an entire model based on, the details. It is no surprise that this farm, regularly recognized for quality on a global scale, continues to innovate. Yet the energy and pace of these efforts awe us, visit after visit.

The coffee we purchase from Finca El Injerto is 100% Bourbon. We’re incredibly proud to offer this exceptional coffee from the Aguirre family year after year.
