How To Brew

The Story

In 2010, coffee producers in Jimma—a city in southwestern Oromia Region, Ethiopia—were selected by the Technoserve Coffee Initiative to receive technical assistance and financing to produce fully washed coffees. Through the program, coffee farmers came together to form several official producer cooperatives, one of which is Duromina, which means “improve their lives” in the Afan Oromo language.

Improve, they have. The Duromina Cooperative and its 320 members cultivate coffee in small plots near their homes and deliver their harvest to a centralized processing site to be slowly dried on raised beds and then hand-sorted for quality. And in addition to agronomy training, processing facilities, and market access, the Duromina Cooperative also gives back to the local community.
