FAQ

Over 20 years ago, Stumptown helped coin the term Direct Trade to describe our way of sourcing the world’s best coffees and challenging supply chain norms.

And it has been our sourcing philosophy ever since. Instead of buying anonymous coffees from a trader, we know our producers; instead of paying prices linked to the commodity market, we pay premiums driven by quality; and instead of being opportunistic, we forge long-term partnerships with producers.

Over the years, the term Direct Trade has become widely used among buyers of specialty coffees, but it means different things to different people. As our business continues to grow and evolve, so will our Direct Trade model to continue our mission of making the most positive impact where we can.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, "USDA certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible."

Coffees can only be designated organic if they've been produced and processed in a manner consistent with these guidelines.

Not all of them, but we do offer quite a few. Organic certification is called out on the labels of all of our organic options, including Holler Mountain, our best-selling organic blend. There’s also French Roast, and if you're interested in single origins, Ethiopia Mordecofe and Indonesia Bies Penantan are two of our favorites, both available year-round. And keep an eye out for seasonal, limited-release organic offerings as well.

Led by the nonprofit network B Lab, B Corp certification is a designation given to businesses that have passed a rigorous assessment and are deemed to be operating at the highest standards, socially and environmentally.

At Stumptown, the process of becoming certified paved the way for us to create systems for evaluating how we run our business. This includes the impacts on our people, the environment, the communities in which we operate, and the farms where we source coffees.
